Daily Life

On this page, you will find...

  • links to full-texts of a wide range of documents and images that provide glimpses into the daily lives of nineteenth-century Jews.
  • brief notations indicating what is most interesting about some of the items featured here.
  • links to searchable archives that focus on very specific content.

Please note, political and economic documents are generally organized on the History page of this site. Documents relating to philanthropy are sometimes of interest in terms of the history of philanthropic institutions and organizations, such as the Board of Guardians or the Soup Kitchen for the Jewish Poor; at other points, they relate individual stories of both largesse and the impact on recipients. While the individual stories provide rich glimpses into daily life, for ease of organization, all documents relating to philanthropy are organized on the History page. For more information on daily life, you may also wish to browse the Feature Stories that provide in-depth introductions to some of the texts collected here.
